WESTFIELD AT ROSEWOOD

In the late 1940s, Frank Stanley Beveridge, the founder of Stanley Park in Westfield, was given a few black squirrels from Michigan as a present by two sales managers for his company, Stanley Home Products. At the time, only red and gray squirrels were found in southern New England with any regularity.
The black squirrels, reportedly six of them, were raised in a large cage at the park and then released, in hopes they could create a sustainable population on the grounds.
The evidence that they succeeded is visible today throughout the Pioneer Valley.
